Hey nineties kid, Hollywood is making yet another play for your nostalgia fueled dollars. Sony Pictures yesterday released a trailer for the big screen adaptation of RL Stine’s young adult horror series Goosebumps.
While the books may have had you quivering under your duvet as a kid, the film looks to be more about getting laughs while giving a self-referential nod to the books. Starring Jack Black as RL Stine, Goosebumps sees big city kid Zach Cooper (played by Dylan Minnette) upset at moving to a small town. Things start to look up when he meets the beautiful girl next door, Hannah (played by Odeya Rush).

From there, things take a turn for the paranormal. It turns out Stine is Hannah’s father and is a prisoner of his own imagination. The monsters that his books made famous are real, and the author protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books.
According to the synopsis for the plot:
When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong.
It’s certainly not the most stimulating trailer to emerge this year, but if the 4-million plus views it’s received on YouTube are anything to go by, then the film should do pretty well. It’s also worth mentioning that Black looks pretty well suited to the role.
