DIY geek-fest Maker Faire comes to Cape Town this August

If you’re into robotics, DIY drones, Arduino projects, space projects and 3D printers, listen up. Cape Town’s first Maker Faire is coming to town.

Taking place from 20 to 23 August, the world-renowned festival will bring together a motley crew of techies, tinkerers, hobbyists and makers.

The event forms part of the third annual Open Design Festival in partnership with Trimble.

Described as part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, the Maker Faire is a celebration of the global Maker Faire Movement — celebrating innovation and experimentation across the spectrum of science, engineering, art, performance and craft.

Omar Pierre Soubra, who’s the director and SketchUp Make Evangelist says that he’s proud to be the presenting sponsor for this platform:

After everything that was demonstrated during the World Design Capital in 2014, there definitely is no doubt that Cape Town is a Maker city and deserved its own platform to show it to the World.

Other partners include the City of Cape Town and the V&A Waterfront.

Sune Stassen, the festival and programme director for the Open Design Cape Town Festival, said:

The core principle behind Open Design is to encourage people of all abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds to imagine a future and build it with what they learn today. We joined forces with Trimble to host the first Maker Faire to emphasise the role that ‘making’ has in designing the future world we want to create.

The first annual Maker Faire Cape Town will take place 20 to 23 August 2015 at the V&A Waterfront. Tickets to both the conference and exhibition can be purchased via Quicket.
