Periscope now has 10 million registered accounts

Just four months after its launch, Periscope claims that it has 10 million registered accounts. The Twitter-owned service says that as of last week, it saw over 40 years of video watched per day. Periscope was launched in March by Twitter as a direct competitor to Meerkat, even cutting Meerkat off from using Twitter data on its path to dominate the live video streaming market.

Over the four months the app has been updated with some good features. Launched on Android and allowed users to sign with their mobile numbers and not their Twitter account.

Periscope says that it has 2-million daily active users on Android and iOS apps.

The company explains that time watched is what it cares about the most. And it should because 10 million registered accounts does not reflect usage.

Periscope says that time watched reflects the value that it is creating for people and the world. It notes that broadcasters are far more pleased with how much time audiences spend watching their broadcasts and for audiences, the pleasure comes from more high quality broadcasts they want to watch and participate in.

“We want Periscopers to know and feel that they’re contributing to a growing ecosystem. And we want people to know that the Periscope team is measuring itself in a way that aligns with the value that the community gets from Periscope” posted Periscope CEO Kayvon Beykpour in a blog.

Periscope says it has a huge viewership on periscope.tv but it has yet to measure its time watched numbers.
