Locally founded Geek Crate is South Africa’s answer to Loot Crate, or that’s what they’re aiming to be. The business model is simple: ship out a monthly box to subscribers filled with a variety of geek goodies. Here at Memeburn we received the very first Geek Crate and decided to unbox it for you.
Each crate is R300 per month for a three month plan, R285 per month for a six month plan, or R275 for a 12-month plan. The boxes will contain a variety of comics, figures, and other goodies from various partners, such as Readers Den, Battle Bunker, and Skycastle Games.

Started by two University of Cape Town students (UCT), this is no easy undertaking. Besides having to attract customers, the duo also needs to coordinate with suppliers, printers, couriers and more to bring this kind of project together. It’s not as simple as ordering a single item from Raru or Takealot.

Overall the first box is okay, but not amazing. The team has received receive mix reaction over their initial offer. In reply to a Facebook post, the team wrote: “We have taken in all the suggestion over the past couple of days, and we hope that the next crate will be a big improvement.”
Bearing in mind this is the team’s very first box, and they’ve mentioned a special suprise for subscribers from the third box onwards, but didn’t elaborate on it.
Nevertheless, have a look at what we found tucked away in our geeky package.
