New Star Wars trailer debuts, internet goes into frenzied meltdown

After months of teasers and gifs and endless speculation from Fanboys all over the world, the full trailer for the new Star Wars movie dropped on Monday night and, quite literally, broke the internet. Or at least, the ticketing part of the internet.

There’s been a lot of talk about this next clip; maybe too much talk. Let’s just watch it first so we can all calm down.

Feeling better? Good, us too. This trailer hits the mark on all scores and ramps up our movie lust into overdrive.

All the enigmatic trailers, the dropped hints and word-of-mouth is starting to make sense. What did we leern? A Stormtrooper sees something that makes him question his very existence, he deserts and finds the rebel force and learns of the hideous dictatorship at the heart of his world; all the myths and legends of the force and the Jedi knights turn out to be true and a new generation must take up the battle against unimaginable evil, guided by some very welcome familiar faces. And a new hero called Rey is born and destined to be a legend.

We might be wrong, but that’s the first impression we’re getting.

The trailer premiered during the massively popular US sporting ritual known as Monday Night Football. At the same time that the trailer was launched, tickets went on sale in America and launched a digital stampede which resulted in the total meltdown of major online retailers like MovieTickets.com and Fandango.

The battle for tickets started to feel like a fight to the death between good and evil.

Some people were the clear winners on the day, although clearly they have other issues to work on.

Others couldn’t cope with the stress and the strain of not being able to get their most prized possessions.

And some just abandoned the “new-fangled” internet and went old school.

And it wasn’t just in the United States where the mania hit hard. British fans snapped up over 10 000 tickets in the first 90 minutes and demand showed no sign of slowing down.

Coupled with the release of the retro, classic-feel of the poster on Sunday, a thrilling score from the maestro John Williams and generally positive feedback about central new characters, it seems that the force is lining up strongly for a cinematic sensation in Christmas 2015 that will re-energize the most loved movie franchise of all time.
