Looking for an alternative to the likes of Uber and Unicab? Well, Taxify has become the latest smart cab service to launch in South Africa.
Or is that “relaunch”? As the service already had a South African launch on February 1…

Anyway, the Europe-based service, which relaunches on Friday 29 April, will be available in Johannesburg at first, the company announced in a press statement. As for platforms, Taxify is available on Android, iOS and Windows devices.
How does the service differ from that of Uber’s then?
For starters, Taxify users can pay with cash (in addition to credit/debit cards), while users can also contact the Taxify call centre for the same service offered by the app (071 188 4044).
Users also pay one rate for any four-door sedan – be it a BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Nissan or Toyota.
Otherwise, customers have a similar experience to Uber’s app, including real-time tracking on a map, driver ratings and detailed car/driver descriptions.
“Being affiliated with approved taxi operators only, gives the company an edge over our competitors. Our passengers are always assured that they are in the hands of professional, licensed drivers, who have security clearance and public carrier insurance. Every driver completes Taxify training to use the technology, maintain their vehicles, deliver professional customer service and build sustainable taxi businesses,” said Taxify South Africa CEO Trevor Joseph.
After Johannesburg, the service will launch in Cape Town, Durban and “other major centres”.
The move comes a few weeks after an Uber strike in Cape Town over reduced fares. But will Taxify have the staying power of the popular service?
