Education and entertainment are two faculties that aren’t usually seen together, except perhaps on YouTube. Using this as a lens for our latest series — Discovering YouTube — we take you on a journey through some of the channels you may just want to subscribe to.
It wouldn’t be farfetched to claim that movies were the purveyors of popular culture well before the internet was born. Even to this day, motion pictures add to our perceptions and constructs about the world, the reaction memes we use online, and perhaps even the way we think about ourselves. Although watching Game Of Thrones won’t turn you into a murderous, power-hungry maniac, there are undoubtedly moments in the series that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

So, in celebration of motion pictures, we’ve put together a brief list of movie-centric YouTube channels that you should check out.
CinemaSins
A bit of an obvious one, CinemaSins takes a critical, sardonic and hilarious look at movies and their innards. Picking apart the meat from the bones, CinemaSins looks at films’ plot holes and overused tropes, to sloppy one liners and ridiculous characterisations. Nothing’s quite safe from their prying eyes.
Screen Junkies
Screen Junkies is perhaps best known for its Honest Trailers series, which injects some much needed truth serum into often overhyped trailers, but it’s so much more than that. The channel also does side-splitting Drunken Movie Fights — which is literally what it sounds like — and general reviews.
Every Frame A Painting
Although uploads to this channel have slowed in recent weeks, Every Frame A Painting takes a bluntly critical look at key decisions made within cinema — from direction, characterisation and story. Some favourites include a look at Snowpiercer‘s physical representation of character choice, and the role something as mundane as chairs play in production.
CinemaWins
The diametric opposite to CinemaSins, CinemaWins also looks at movies under a critical lens, but rather lauds the positive points within flicks. Instead of poking fun at them, CinemaWins dissects the moments in movies that makes them great. The critical explanation at the foot of each video is also extremely informative to students or simple movie enthusiasts.
The Nerd Writer
Movies are so much more than moving pictures, and that’s what Nerd Writer focuses on in his videos. Deconstructing and dissecting great films and series piece by piece, Nerd Writer also looks at matters of popular culture, like how Donald Trump answers questions.
Your Movies Suck
Deathly-critical and painfully honest, no movie can really escape the wrath of YMS’s reviews. With a sprinkle of contempt, each movie is ripped apart bit by bit by eagle-eyed Adam Johnson. He does enjoy the odd cuss here and there, but that just makes each video review seem, well, even more honest.
