Facebook: 950m interactions from 195m users during Euro 2016

Data from Facebook reveals that Euro 2016 in France was one of the most talked about sporting events in history. The tournament which began on 10 June and ended on 10 July 2016 saw 195-million users involved in 950-million interactions.

During the final, which was played on 10 July 2016, Facebook saw about 45-million users taking part in 146-million interactions.

Globally, the key moments included Ronaldo lifting the trophy at the end of the match, the winning goal scored by Eder, the final whistle, and Ronaldo’s injury.

The top five most discussed players around the world during the final included Cristiano Ronaldo at 53%, Pepe at 10%, Nani [7%], Dimitri Payet [6%] and Ricardo Quaresma [5%].

The conversations were slightly different in France and although Cristiano Ronaldo dominated the conversations with 51%, much of the discussions were about French players Dimitri Payet, Moussa Sissoko and Olivier Giroud.

Portugal, compared to France, was a lot more patriotic in their conversations and speaking more about players from their own team. The top five most discussed players in Portugal were Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma, Pepe and Eder. The least talked about player in Portugal and the only French player in the top five was midfielder Dimitri Payet at 5%.
