Snow grips South Africa as users build snowmen on Instagram

Thanks to the latest cold front system that’s taking its sweet time passing over South Africa, much of the country’s interior is blanketed in a thick layer of snow. It’s not unprecedented, it’s just unexpected, especially since the country is in the throws of one of its worst droughts in recent memory.

So, being the upvote lovers that humans are, many adventure seekers have taken to the Eastern Cape highlands, the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and the Free State to craft snowmen, throw snowballs at one another and make snow angels.

For all those shenanigans and more, have a look at the light covering of snow that graced Instagram, and South Africa, this past week.

The Eastern Cape interior enjoyed its fair share of fluffy white stuff.

Maclear was one of the most affected smaller towns. The snow sure is gorgeous though.

The tiny town of Nottingham Road in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands was also blanketed in a thick layer of snow. According to some of these images, the snow’s still there.

Perhaps not covering in snow at the ground level, the Western Cape also received some sprinkles. The Karoo’s Swartberge — the tallest peak system in the province — was also blanketed in snow.
