Richard Branson was in Cape Town for the relaunch of the Virgin Money insurance service, but the Virgin mogul had a lot to say about Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) announced that it would be dropping charges against the politician, with Branson heaping praise on the move.

“I just want to say it’s wonderful, wonderful news that your Finance Minister has been exonerated today. And I wish it had happened in a week’s time, because (of) the low Rand… I’m on holiday here at the moment for a week,” Branson told the press conference.

“It’s great to see some stability brought back to South Africa.”

Branson also shared his thoughts on meeting Gordhan.

“I met him the last time I was in South Africa and I thought he was a tremendous… fantastic individual and he epitomised the stability that South Africa needed. So, the wrong decision being made today could’ve been devastating, I think, for South Africa. And the right decision’s been made, and South Africa needs somebody at the wheel of the ship, to steer it into… safe waters.

“So I think what happened today is very very important for South Africa.”
