You can ‘buy’ stuff on Instagram from next week (but not in SA)

Facebook and Pinterest have allowed you to buy items/services on the platforms for a while now, but now it’s Instagram’s turn to join the party.

Yep, the photo-based social network has announced that it will (sort of) allow people to buy stuff via the platform from next week.

“While browsing and discovery is easy on mobile, finding more information about the specific products you see isn’t always as simple. On a platform known for its power of mobile discovery, today we’re excited to announce an easier experience to shop the products you love on Instagram,” the company wrote on its business blog.

“Starting next week, we’re testing a way for our community to learn more about the items they view within an Instagram post.”

Instagram will offer a better shopping experience soon – at least for US consumers

As the above quote implies, you won’t actually be buying the items directly on Instagram’s website (you’ll be taken to the store website).

Instead, you’ll find a “tap to view” icon on the seller’s post.

“When tapped, a tag will appear on various products in the post — showcasing up to five products and their prices. Once a tag is selected a new detailed view of the product will open,” the social network explained.

“This functionality will bring important product information to the consumer earlier in the journey, all without having to leave the Instagram app to search. Then, if the consumer taps the ‘Shop Now’ link from the product details view, they’ll go directly to that product on the business’ website, making it easier for them to buy the product they want.”

Twenty US retail brands will take part in the first wave of testing, including Kate Spade, Abercrombie & FitchJackThreads, Macy’s and Warby Parker.

And yes, this test will only be available in the USA for select iOS users.
