Netflix has had a 4K streaming option for a while now, being part of its highest pricing tier. In fact, the company was one of the first major services to roll out 4K support.
But in a rather surprising move, the streaming colossus and Microsoft have announced that 4K content will be exclusive to Windows 10 machines.

“4K content from Netflix is now available exclusively for compatible PCs and 2-in-1 devices with Windows 10, including the new Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, premiering November 25th,” the Redmond company announced on its blog.
Have a Windows 10 device and want to get in on the action? Well, you’ll need to use the Edge browser too.
Netflix will stream 4K content exclusively on Windows 10 – but will the partnership bear fruit?
“Check out the new streaming experience with Microsoft Edge, the only browser that supports Netflix 4K content,” Microsoft adds.
Microsoft cautions that users will also need a seventh generation Intel Core processor to take advantage of 4K content.
It all makes for a rather interesting situation, as the likes of YouTube, Vimeo and Amazon Prime Video don’t have similar content restrictions. And in an era when gaming consoles and streaming boxes are ever-popular ways to watch content, it makes you wonder whether this will be a smart move for Netflix.
