Netflix users can now download films and movies to their mobile devices via the app, the streaming service announced.

Eddy Wu, the company’s director of product innovation, explains that it was numerous user suggestions that prompted the feature’s inclusion.

“While many members enjoy watching Netflix at home, we’ve often heard they also want to continue their Stranger Things binge while on airplanes and other places where internet is expensive or limited,” he explains.

Netflix users in the States can now download series and movies for offline viewing

As for the feature itself, it’s reminiscent of ShowMax’s offline downloading service.

Simply head to your favourite series or movie, navigate to the description, and tap on the download link (it should be alongside the play icon).

The feature allows users to select WiFi only downloading, and an updated download list from which users can pick and choose. However, these does seem to be a few features missing, including the inability to select a preferred download quality.

“The new feature is included in all plans and available for phones and tablets on Android and iOS,” Wu adds.

Netflix doesn’t explain how many series or movies you’re allowed to download at any given time, or how long these downloads will be available on the device, but this is at least a positive step for those who are always on the move.

The feature is also available to South African users, but you’ll need to update your app to the latest version — that’s 9.0.0 on iOS and 4.12.0 on Android.
