Is Vitality’s Apple Watch deal worth it? Cape Town blogger finds out

Discovery Vitality’s Apple Watch deal is undeniably tempting. You buy Cupertino’s latest wearable packed with swanky tech, and exercise to drop the eventual price. It sounds like a complete steal in many ways, but is it really?

That’s what Capetonian and SwimGeek author Joe Botha set out to discover.

While he does note that the offering itself is a mixed bag — the deal will be beneficial and cheaper to different people — it’s definitely not as clear-cut as it seems on paper.

“It seems you just have to assume you will get to a 900 points per week goal very soon if you reach a few weekly goals,” Botha explains on his blog.

“The only way to keep getting to the 900 points per week goal is if you do three 30min cardio sessions per week.”

Reaching those goals will effectively “fund” your Apple Watch. But you’ll need to reach four every single month for 24 months. Yikes.

The Apple Watch deal might be worth it… but you’ll have to work for it

“I like gym and walking and swimming and cycling as much as the next optimistic watch wearer, but let’s be real, it’s just not going to happen,” Botha adds.

Either way, if you don’t quite get the Apple Watch for free, you’ll still be able to draw “dick-pics” on it. Well, research firm Gartner did suggest that consumers wanted wearables to be more useful.

If you’re interested in Discovery’s Vitality Apple Watch deal, Botha’s latest blog might just be worth the read.
