5 Netflix exclusives coming to South Africa this February

Netflix doesn’t stand still when it comes to content, with new movies and TV shows hitting the streaming service all the time (content also leaves the service, but that’s another article).

There are services telling us what to expect for next month, but finding SA-bound content can be tricky. So with that in mind, we sifted through the Netflix website to find exclusive content SA viewers can expect next month.

3 February: Santa Clarita Diet

The first week of February sees 10-episode series Santa Clarita Diet making its way to the service, starring Timothy Olyphant and Drew Barrymore.

“Joel (Timothy Olyphant) and Sheila (Drew Barrymore) are husband and wife realtors leading vaguely discontented lives in the LA suburb of Santa Clarita with their teenaged daughter Abby, until Sheila goes through a dramatic change sending their lives down a road of death and destruction…but in a good way,” reads the synopsis.

Drama flick Imperial Dreams also launches on 3 February.

“A young father returns home from jail eager to care for his son and become a writer, but crime, poverty and a flawed system threaten his plans,” reads the Netflix description.

Finally, the day caps off with standup comedy special Daniel Sosa: Sosafado launching on the service.

10 February: Abstract: The Art of Design

The second Friday of the month sees some interesting picks as well, starting with David Brent: Life on the Road.

The movie “sees a documentary crew catching up with the idiosyncratic David Brent from the BBC2’s mockumentary The Office“, Netflix writes.

Expect a solid amount of original content on Netflix in February — at least if this roundup is anything to go by

Abstract: The Art of Design is the second pick on 10 February, being a Netflix original “docu-series” that “takes you beyond blueprints and computers into the art and science of design”.

Next on the list is You Me Her, being a 10-episode series.

“Married couple Jack and Emma tries to spice up their sex life by hiring an escort, but they both end up falling for her,” reads the synopsis.

14 February: Girlfriend’s Day

Valentine’s Day sees just one title being added to Netflix, in the form of Girlfriend’s Day. So what’s it about?

“In a city where greeting card writers are celebrated like movie stars, romance writer Ray Wentworth (Bob Odenkirk) used to be the king. In trying to recapture the feelings that once made him the greatest, he gets entangled in a web of murder and deceit as writers vie to create the perfect card for a new holiday: Girlfriend’s Day.”

17 February: Chef’s Table

It’s another solitary entry, but it’s a goodie in the form of Chef’s Table Season Three (the above trailer is for season two, though).

The six-part season covers six highly regarded chefs from the likes of South Korea, Russia, Peru and Germany.

24 February: Ultimate Beastmaster

A movie and a TV series are lined up for the third Saturday of the month, starting with I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore. The movie charts the story of a nursing assistant with an existential crisis.

“But when her house is burglarised, Ruth discovers a renewed sense of purpose in tracking down the thieves. Accompanied by her obnoxious martial-arts-enthusiast neighbor Tony (Elijah Wood), they soon find themselves dangerously out of their depth against a pack of degenerate criminals.”

Finally, Ultimate Beastmaster is the last original bit of content for the month, being a 10-episode series akin to Ninja Warrior.

“Each hour-long episode will feature 12 competitors, two from each country [Brazil, Germany, Japan, Mexico, South Korea and the USA – ed], who will take their shot at running one of the most physically demanding obstacle courses ever devised, The Beast,” reads a Netflix description.

The tenth and final episode will see the winners from the previous episodes face off against one another.
