The Airbus A350-900 is a gorgeous piece of aircraft engineering, but for Lufthansa, its sculpted wingtips just weren’t enough.
The German airliner has announced that it will install a novel creature comfort in its cabins, giving passengers variable lighting settings that mimics light on the ground. This system, which will use LEDs, will aim to alleviate the stress on passengers’ biorhythms when crossing timezones.

“With the introduction of Lufthansa’s new A350-900, it has now for the first time become possible to work with and fit with the biorhythms of the passengers by providing the right type of light at the right time,” the company states in a press release.

Around 24 lighting settings will be available, providing warm light “during periods of rest” and cooler light during “more active phases”.
“Lighting effects will also be used to emulate a pleasant restaurant atmosphere on board during mealtimes,” Lufthansa adds.
“Our focus is on passengers’ needs when it comes to selecting the type of light to be used,” according to We are thus able to create a pleasant atmosphere which can significantly improve the passengers’ feeling of well-being,” explains Professor Volker from Kardorff — a company involved in researching and developing Lufthansa’s lighting system.
Ten of the airliners’ Airbus A350-900s will boast the new system and will be stationed in Munich, Boston and New Delhi.
