In the last few years we’ve seen a massive resurgence in superhero movies. From Christopher Nolan’s dark Batman reboot (Batman Begins) to the formation of The Avengers, our desire for the caped crusaders has certainly received a lot of attention.
2017 seems will be no different, providing us with a string of superhero titles to indulge in. Here’s a chronological list of some of this year’s most notable releases…

Power Rangers (24 March)
It’s time to put the nostalgia-mobile in top gear. This year we’re going to see the rebirth of our favourite 90s spandex-clad superheroes, the Power Rangers.
It seems to feature a relatively unknown cast as the Rangers but Elizabeth Banks will be taking on the role of the villainous Rita Repulsa and Bryan Cranston will be voicing the floating face mentor, Zordon.
I think we can expect a fair amount of cheesiness when considering the trailer, with a healthy dose of on-the-nose humour and your typical “you we’re born for this” and “this is your destiny” tropes. But it looks like we’ll be in for another special effects treat, which will probably be this film’s redeeming factor.
Whatever the case may, there’s just one thing to remember… it’s morphin’ time!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (5 May)
It’s time for a new intergalactic adventure with Starlord and co. in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Set about three months after the events of its predecessor, we follow the Guardians as they try to be “a family” while searching for Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) true parentage, a mystery that’s answers will undoubtedly come with its own set of adventures. Just check the trailer above.
This instalment looks like it will have all the sci-fi glamour, action and humour that made the original so great… but with baby Groot. So much, much better.
Wonder Woman (2 June)
After her spectacular entrance in Batman vs. Superman, I couldn’t wait to see Gal Godat in action again as Wonder Woman a.k.a. Diana, the Amazonian warrior princess.
From what I’ve seen in the various trailers, it seems like Gadot will be portraying a surprisingly fierce and poised Wonder Woman. It also looks like we’ll be taken to a plethora of aesthetically stunning locations such as the lush island of Themyscira (the Amazonian home world) to the war-torn field of World War I.
Other notable case members are Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, a US Air force Captain that washes up on the beach of Themyscira, Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta, the Diana’s Mother and Queen of the Amazonians and David Thewlis as Ares, the sinister Greek god of war.
Spiderman: Homecoming (7 July)
In the last few years our friendly neighbourhood Spiderman has had his share of movie reboots, with the upcoming Spiderman: Homecoming serving as his third go at the big screen in the last fifteen years.
This time around we have Tom Holland (In the Heart of the Sea) filling the nimble shoes of Spiderman a.k.a. Peter Parker, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man taking on the role of his superhero mentor.
Homecoming will follow a high-school Peter Parker (hence the young casting for the superhero) as he transitions into Spiderman and eventually takes on the wicked Vulture (Michael Keaton), who is also making his first appearance on screen.
As with previous Spiderman movies, Homecoming looks like it will boast an entertaining balance between humour and action.
Justice League (November 17)
Justice League is undeniably this year’s biggest superhero release, serving as DC Comics’ answer to Marvel’s The Avengers.
Following the events of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, in the trailer we can see Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) on a mission to recruit a “team of people with special abilities”, with some being convinced a lot easier than others.
Although the trailer doesn’t really delve into the plot too much, Warner Bros. has revealed that the group of heroes will be facing off against Steppenwolf, which will be played by Game of Thrones actor, Ciarán Hinds.
We also see the full debut of Jason Mamoa as Aqauman, Ezra Miller as The Flash and Ray Fisher as Cyborg, all three of which had their cameo appearance in Batman VS. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Now let’s just hope that this doesn’t turn out to be a Suicide Squad level disappointment.
