Zapper, a South African mobile QR scanner app, has hit one million downloads.

The app allows its merchants to receive payments from customers by means of scanning a generated QR code. Customers can also use it to pay bills sporting a Zapper QR code, or to register and login to any website using the code scanner.

This achievement comes just three years after the company made its way onto the South African restaurant circuit.

The app managed to reach this benchmark through strategic expansion across verticals such as the hospitality industry, retail, billing as well as ecommerce. It also managed to expand into other verticals such as fuel and donations.

“This is a proud moment for Zapper. Over the last few years we have endeavoured to build a product that would impact the mobile payments arena and drive innovation forward,” said GM for Zapper SA, Will Heygate in a press release.

Zapper has broken the benchmark of a million downloads

The company has built a strong presence in 14 countries across the globe to date, which includes the UK, Spain, and the US.

“We would like to thank all our users for their continued support and feedback; which has been instrumental to our global success. As Zapper paves the way to the future, we will continue to provide our users with a product that enriches their lives,” Heygate continued.

The app is currently free to download on Android, iOS and Windows phones.
