#MetGala: Rihanna ignites social media with fandangle frock

Rihanna can be a divisive figure in the music and fashion industries, but there’s no denying her power to create almost instantaneous social media trends in the blink of an eye. Or perhaps in this case, a flash of a frock?

At last night’s #MetGala, the annual celebrity shindig that sees stars from Famousville descend on New York City for a night of charity and dress up, the Barbadian singer-songwriter left Twitter wondering why anyone else even bothered to dress up.

Donning a gown comprised of flakes of brightly coloured, flower-imprinted fabric, Riri was more the vehicle for a piece of art than a celebrity simply wearing a pretty dress. And that’s the general rhetoric that coursed through social media too.

“Rihanna won everyone else go home now, it’s over #MetGala,” one person emphatically stated.

“Rihanna just destroyed the Met Gala red carpet, so there you go,” Buzzfeed couldn’t help but tweet.

#Rihanna is queen of #metgala2017,” another triumphantly announced.

In typical Twitter fashion, not everyone took the fashion statement seriously.

While the dress was a bit much for anyone who happens to wear clothes on a daily basis, Rihanna was one of few attendees to actually stick to this year’s theme celebrating Comme des Garçons — the fashion label founded by Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo.

Her lines often resemble sculptures, or masses of fabric with varying textures. Riri clearly did her homework then.

Other celebrities had to stand behind a Riri-shaped shadow for much of the night.

It was the first time in six years that Beyonce was absent from the Gala, but that didn’t stop people from talking about her on Twitter.

Jaden Smith also caused a stir, walking the red carpet with heels, a stern black coat and his own shorn dreadlocks in his hands.

The likes of Selena Gomez, Zendaya and P. Diddy, who incidentally had a little lie down on the red carpet, also walked away with Twitter hits on the night.
