SoundCloud has long been known as a portal for recording artists to upload their tracks, and listeners to indulge in them gratis. But it’s also becoming a key player in the content discovery race.

The company’s new feature, dubbed The Upload, takes a leaf out of Spotify’s personal playlist curation handbook.

SoundCloud will now provide listeners with a “regularly updated, bespoke playlist of new music relevant to you”.

“With a constantly expanding mix of music uploaded to SoundCloud every day, we’ve now made it easier to filter through it all,” the company writes in its blog.

Cherry-picked based on your previous listens and likes, the playlist will feature similar tracks to what you’d normally listen to on the service. In my personal Upload playlist today, the company’s listed 19 tracks spanning the likes of tropical house and indie dance.

Notably though, not a single track had more than 15 000 plays, or was more than a week old.

So yes, they’re pretty fresh.

Nothing has drastically changed physically on SoundCloud’s website, but the Discover tab is now headed by a large, rectangular block. As for the iOS and Android apps, The Upload feature isn’t housed in a dedicated portion of the app, but will recommend tracks when you use in-app search.

“The more you listen to on SoundCloud, the better The Upload will surface new artists and music for you,” the company notes.
