Last week in trailers: Flatliners sequel & a Groundhog Day horror

It’s the week of the psychological thrillers and comedies, because 2017 is nothing if not an emotional rollercoaster that never seems to end. Please keep your arms and legs inside the ride at all times.

Here’s a few trailers that premiered last week. Welcome to the trip.

Flatliners

Last week brought us the much-anticipated sequel to the 1990 film Flatliners — and while it doesn’t star Kevin Bacon, it does see Kiefer Sutherland reprise his role, and welcomes newcomers Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev, and Diego Luna.

The psychological thriller tells of a group of medical students who stop their hearts to experience the afterlife, but when past tragedies come back to haunt them, they end up fighting for their lives.

Flatliners will be in South African cinemas 3 November.

Goodbye Christopher Robin

The trailer for Goodbye Christopher Robin promises a far more upbeat story than the title, but don’t let it fool you. This film, much like Saving Mr Banks, is designed to make you cry.

After the war, AA Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) finds respite in his innocent son who provides the inspiration for the Winnie the Pooh novels. But when the eyes of the world are turned to the young boy, what will be the cost to their family?

Goodbye Christopher Robin does not yet have a South African release date, but its US release is 13 October.

Happy Death Day

If Before I Fall didn’t sate your appetite for Groundhog Day-style films, then look no further than Happy Death Day. Directed by Christopher Landon of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, the film tells of a college student who has to relive the day of her murder until she discovers who her killer is.

Calling it now: that’s not going to be how the loop ends. It’s going to be something stupid like answering her phone when she wakes up.

Happy Death Day is out in the US 13 October — no word yet on when it will head to our shores.

Friends From College

If you’ve been feeling the lack of a feel-good ensemble comedy show to binge, then Netflix has you covered (though don’t like it too much or Netflix will cancel it out from under you.)

Friends From College is an original series that follows a “comedic exploration of old friendships, former romantic entanglements and balancing adult life with nostalgia for the past.” It stars Keegan-Michael Key, Cobie Smulders and features Kate McKinnon.

It will be streaming globally from 14 July.

Home Again

Reese Witherspoon once again stars in something written by someone who has no idea how children talk, but if it’s even half as good as Big Little Lies then who am I to judge?

Alice Kinney, recently separated from her husband, celebrates her fortieth birthday by hooking up with someone half her age. When she agrees to let the young man and his two friends live with her, “the arrangement ends up unfolding in unexpected ways.” Get it, girl.

Home Again reaches South African shores 15 September.

Daddy’s Home 2

Critics may have hated Daddy’s Home, but when a comedy brings in US$242 million, you have to make a sequel.

This time Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg have sorted out their differences, but things become shaky when their fathers (John Lithgow and Mel Gibson) join them for Christmas.

Daddy’s Home 2 hits South African cinemas 24 November.

Milk + Honey

Issa Rae’s latest web series is Milk + Honey. While there were three episodes aired a few years back, Brown Paper Dolls seems to have found the funds to continue the series properly.

The show will be premiering on Issa Rae’s YouTube channel on Wednesday, 21 June.

Jungle

Daniel Radcliffe is back in the jungle, but this time he’s alive and far less flatulent. The former Harry Potter star appears here as Yossi Ghinsberg, an Israeli adventurer who was stranded in the Amazon for three weeks in the 1980s.

Cue the comments about the Forbidden Forest, acromantulas and how all the Harry Potter jokes are getting old.

Jungle has no release date yet, though it can be assumed it will be out this year. In the meantime, why not check out Swiss Army Man?
