It’s been a bounteous week for trailer lovers everywhere, as big names like Pitch Perfect and Game of Thrones were promoted alongside smaller indie films and clear Oscar contenders. Let’s get right to it.
Pitch Perfect 3
No ad to show here.
The Pitch Perfect franchise is (probably) coming to an end, with Pitch Perfect 3 sending the Barden Bellas to their final competition in Europe hosted by the United Service Organisation to support the US military.
Is anyone else feeling a mixture of nostalgia and relief? It’s like saying goodbye to a loved one after spending way too much time with them on holiday. I love you, but please get out my face.
Say maybe-goodbye to Pitch Perfect on 22 December.
The Only Living Boy in New York
Despite the title, The Only Living Boy in New York is not a whitewashed I Am Legend. The indie film ostensibly tells of the weird relationship between a young New Yorker and his father’s mistress.
The film stars Pierce Brosnan and Kate Beckinsale (and was going to star Miles Teller before he dropped out). It’s going to be very easy on the eyes.
The film does not have a South African release date — but there’s a good chance it will be available on Amazon after its US release on 11 August.
Stronger
All you need to know about Stronger is that it stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany — both acting powerhouses in their own rights.
But if you need a little more: Stronger is about Jeff Bauman, who lost both his legs in the Boston bombing when he went to cheer on his ex-girlfriend in the hopes of winning her back. He eventually became the symbol of hope for a city pushing to remain strong in the face of terror.
The film will be in South African theatres 22 September.
Marshall
In another film about Americans triumphing over hate, Marshall details the life of Thurgood Marshall before he became the first African-American Supreme Court Justice. It looks specifically at a case Marshall took on in which a white employer accused her black chauffeur of sexual assault and attempted murder.
The film stars Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad and Kate Hudson. It does not yet have a South African release, but will be out 13 October in the US.
To the Bone
Lily Collins plays Ellen, a 20-year-old who has suffered with anorexia through her teen years despite trying every possible treatment. Eventually her family decide to send her to a ‘non-traditional’ group home for youths where she is asked to discover for herself how to confront her addiction.
Also starring Keanu Reeves, To the Bone premieres on Netflix globally 14 July.
Thank You For Your Service
You may have missed out on Miles Teller in The Only Living Boy in New York, but fear not: he’s still kicking this week in the trailer for Thank You For Your Service.
The biographical war drama tells of three returning soldiers battling PTSD faced with the task of reintegration into society.
Catch Thank You For Your Service in cinemas 5 January 2018.
Annabelle: Creation
Annabelle: Creation is the latest film in The Conjuring universe and it’s here to play on your fears of possessed dolls. The film stands as a prequel to 2014’s Annabelle, and tells of orphan girls and a nun who seek shelter with a friendly couple and a creepy doll.
Annabelle: Creation will be in cinemas 18 August.
Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones season 7 has a second trailer, and it’s reeling me back in with its focus on Love of My Life Sansa Stark.
The trailer largely promotes the white walker story line, highlighting the need for the Houses to band together and face their common enemy. (Is it an allegory for climate change? Probably not, but let’s make it one anyway.)
Game of Thrones premieres 16 July.
