Ed Sheeran leaves Twitter, Lady Gaga asks her fans to calm down

Ed Sheeran has “come off Twitter completely,” after trolls and hateful comments became too much to bear.

“Twitter’s a platform [for people saying mean things],” he told The Sun in an interview. “One comment ruins your day.”

Many of these comments came from Lady Gaga fans who assumed he was talking about her when he said in an interview that he did “not want to be the kind of artist who has had two successful albums and then feels invincible”.

“The smartest thing to do is listen to people who know I do not want to do the Super Bowl years later, after my biggest success, just to prove I’m still relevant.”

Shortly after the interview, #EdSheeranisOverParty picked up on Twitter.

While many were using the hashtag to bash Sheeran, most were using it to condemn.

“Lady Gaga’s fanbase read an interview in which they assumed I was talking about her and they all fucking hate,” he told The Sun. “I think Twitter gets on a massive steam roll of assuming things and then you get in the shit.”

His departure from social media led to a small resurgence of the hashtag with some celebrating their successful campaign.

Lady Gaga eventually stepped in to call for an end to the harassment.

“No reason to tear down an artist simply because they are on top,” she wrote. “Work harder to be kinder everybody. That should be your first duty to humanity.”

Ed Sheeran’s Twitter remains active, posting links from his Instagram.
