South Africa’s box office: Despicable Me 3 gets 15 seconds of fame

If I copied last week’s report and pasted it here, I would have to change very little for it to be factual. It’s the curse of US summer (and, yes, the curse also includes the damage to our wallets).

This week’s new Big Budget is Despicable Me 3, the animated sequel to the film that introduced minions to the world. The film unsurprisingly topped the charts in its debut (it competed against far smaller newcomers), but don’t expect it to stay there for long: Spider-Man: Homecoming is on its way this Friday and is sure to knock it down to second. But how did the other blockbusters cope this week? (30 June to 2 July)

No brownie points for guessing: Transformers: The Last Knight stepped down into second, Cars 3 to third. Wonder Woman is now in fourth.

Despicable Me 3 — and its minions — debut at the top spot this weekend

In an shocking twist of events, The Mummy fell two spots down to sixth, letting Baywatch cling to fifth for one more week. Also falling two was Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, which now sees itself in ninth, sure to be ejected from the charts shortly. It has spent but a month in the top ten.

All Eyez on Me, the Tupac Shakur biopic, opened in seventh place. Despite lukewarm reviews, the film debuted respectably amid blockbuster competition.

Finally, teen romance Everything, Everything (review) dropped to tenth in just its second weekend on the chart. If only the “everything” it promoted included a relation to a decades old franchise.

Here are ten most-watched movies in SA this past weekend:
