Some weeks, absolutely no interesting trailers get released and building this roundup feels futile. Other weeks, there are so many trailers I wonder if I’ll even have time to watch them all (I’m kidding, I always do.)
Comic-Con week is the latter, so let’s jump straight in.
No ad to show here.
Justice League
Yes, they’re still pretending Superman is dead. Yes, they did give Wonder Woman a big role in the trailer after her successful solo endeavour, and, yes, this is going to be so much fun.
Justice League is out in South Africa 17 November.
(As a side note: a 3-minute trailer for Avengers: Infinity War was leaked, but it’s terrible quality and I wouldn’t recommend searching for it.)
Stranger Things
The strangest part about this trailer is Will’s haircut. I know it’s the 80s, but Netflix didn’t have to do him like this.
He’s suffered enough.
Stranger Things premieres on Netflix 27 October — four days before Halloween because they’re quirky like that.
Ready Player One
This trailer touts director Stephen King as a “cinematic game changer” and Ernest Cline’s original novel as a “holy grail of pop culture”. Those are some pretty high standards to live up to, and I for one am glad that pressure isn’t on me.
Ready Player One is in SA 30 March 2018.
Thor: Ragnarok
A short-haired and shirtless Chris Hemsworth, a villainous Cate Blanchett, and a badass Tessa Thompson make for a very sexy trailer. I’m sure there is more astute commentary to be had, but that’s all you’re getting out of me.
Thor: Ragnarok is out 27 October.
Blade Runner: 2049
I can’t believe Blade Runner: 2049 invented cinematography. Beautiful, incredible, a masterpiece.
Catch it in cinemas 6 October.
Marvel’s The Defenders
Marvel’s The Defenders has had seasons of buildup to get to this, the war for New York. Unfortunately, Iron Fist is still around. But Jessica Jones is too, and you can’t have light without dark, so I’ll suck it up.
The Defenders premieres on Netflix 18 August.
Westworld
The robots are back, and they’re more violent and bloody than ever. Obviously.
Westworld returns next year.
Pacific Rim 2: Uprising
Who am I watching Pacific Rim trailers? I’m me times a thousand, tall as a mountain with a beating heart that burns as bright as the sun.
Catch John Boyega in Pacific Rim 2: Uprising 23 February 2018.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Round two of campy spy goodness is back, and still no sign of Roxy. Reader, if this movie kills her, I will be out for blood.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle is out 29 September.
Bright
It’s Bad Boys with orcs and fairies and wizards, and if that doesn’t excite you even a little bit then you and I are on very different wavelengths.
Bright premieres on Netflix 22 December.
Marvel’s Inhumans
This trailer is all about letting you know Inhumans is coming to IMAX first, but let’s just be honest: you’re gonna need stronger cinematography and visual effects to make the R150 worth it.
Sorry, Marvel.
Inhumans is premieres 1 September (in IMAX, in case you missed it).
The Shape of Water
Guillermo del Toro’s latest endeavour involves a mute woman falling in love with a fish, because human men are trash.
In all seriousness, the film is set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963 and looks to tie in to del Toro’s Hellboy universe.
The Shape of Water hits SA shores 19 January 2018.
The Flash
There’s dimension crossing, there’s Iris West, there’s Cisco, and most importantly: there are two South African actors in this season.
The Flash premieres on the CW 10 October, and does not yet have a DStv release.
Outlander
TV’s sexiest time travel romance is back, and it promises angst and pining and Capetonian sets. What more could you ask for?
Outlander premiers on STARZ 10 September, and does not have a DStv release either.
Proud Mary
Taraji P. Henson plays an assassin whose life turns upside down when she meets a young boy after a hit job gone wrong. Thank you, Sony. Thank you.
Catch Proud Mary 26 January 2018.
The Disaster Artist
Tommy Wiseau’s The Room was a movie so bad it became a cult classic. Now Seth Rogen, James Franco and Dave Franco are teaming up to bring us the biopic of how such a wonderfully terrible movie came to be.
The Disaster Artist does not yet have a South African release, but will be in the US 1 December.
Professor Marston & the Wonder Women
Harvard psychologist Dr William Moulton Marston created Wonder Woman with the help of his wife Elizabeth, and their girlfriend Olive Byrne. The Marstons were into feminism, comics and good old-fashioned BDSM — and here to bring it to screen is none other than Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
The biopic will be released 27 October in the US.
The Gifted
Marvel’s latest TV endeavour The Gifted tells the story of a suburban couple who find out their children have mutant powers. Drama ensues.
Set to air 2 October in the US, The Gifted does not yet have an SA release.
The Snowman
Don’t let the thumbnail fool you: this isn’t about a demon snowman terrorising a neighbourhood. Rather, it’s about a serial killer taunting detectives on their hunt for the misogynistic murderer in the dead of winter.
It stars Michael Fassbender and Rebecca Ferguson, and will be in SA 13 October.
Atypical
The latest in Netflix Shows that Will Probably Be Cancelled (Me? Bitter?), Atypical tells of a young boy on the autism spectrum trying to make his way through high school. From dating to family drama to trying to figure out human beings, the show explores it all.
Atypical premieres 11 August.
Only the Brave
In Only the Brave, Miles Teller stars as a firefighter part of an elite crew that battled the Yarnell Hill Fire in Arizona in 2013.
It does not yet have an SA release, but is scheduled for 20 October in the US.
