It may be Wednesday, but late is always better than never when it comes to something as important as trailers — including red band ones for films meant to come out nearly 347 years ago. So here’s what Hollywood promoted in the last week and a half.
Tulip Fever
No ad to show here.
Tulip Fever has been through the most. Originally meant to star Jude Law and Keira Knightley in 2004, it hit a snag when tax rules were changed in the UK. It got picked up again in 2013 and filming proceeded the following year with an almost entirely new cast and crew.
It was meant to be released in July 2016, was moved to February 2017, then — finally — August. And this month the producers have gifted us with a red band trailer to sell the film on little more than sex and pretty faces. Not a terrible marketing strategy.
Tulip Fever hits South African theatres on 10 November.
Molly’s Game
Aaron Sorkin’s Molly’s Game tells the true story of Molly Bloom, who hosted Hollywood elites, sports stars, business titans and the Russian mafia in the world’s most exclusive high stakes poker game before eventually being caught by the FBI.
It stars Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Chris O’Dowd, and Michael Cera.
The film does not have a South African release yet, but will be in the US on 22 November.
Marvel’s The Punisher
If the recently released The Defenders hasn’t sated your Marvel/Netflix appetite, then feast your eyes on the latest teaser for The Punisher — the show that focuses on Frank Underwood as he becomes a vigilante to fight crimes by all means necessary.
It is scheduled for release this year.
Blade Runner 2049
Here’s yet another trailer for the much-anticipated Blade Runner 2049. This time we get a glimpse into the life and relationship of Ryan Gosling’s character and a lot more action. YouTube comment criticisms range from Gosling having a “waspy” face to the fact it “doesn’t seem” great. Make of that what you will.
Blade Runner 2049 is out on 6 October.
American Horror Story: Cult
The seventh season of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story is ostensibly about a woman whose dormant mental illnesses resurface after being triggered by US President Donald Trump’s election. There are clowns, children, lesbians and a whole lot of white people.
The trailer offers nothing original or nuanced, though that’s never been Ryan Murphy’s strong suit anyway.
AHS: Cult premieres in the US on 5 September.
Little Evil
On the same wavelength as Wet Hot American Summer, Little Evil is a horror parody starring Adam Scott as stepfather to the son of Satan.
The film will be released on Netflix on 1 September.
The Florida Project
The Florida Project is an indie film about childhood, love, and pastel colours and it will certainly make you cry if you can get your hands on it.
Starring Willem Dafoe, it is set to premiere in the US on 6 October. It should be available digitally shortly after.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
From the director of The Lobster comes this confusing trailer for The Killing of a Sacred Deer. The film, which premiered at Cannes Film Festival, stars Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman and will premiere in the US on 3 November.
