After a stellar run of three years, Norwegian internet company Opera has announced that its data saving app, Opera Max, is officially dead.
The announcement comes after a reassessment of Opera’s focus areas, with browsers becoming its integral subject.

“The product had a substantially different value proposition than our browser products, and represented a different focus for Opera. We, therefore, focus on our browsers and other upcoming services,” it noted in a brief press release.
Opera Max will no longer be updated
The app itself allowed traffic to be funneled through Opera’s servers, compressed, and returned to users in a thriftier package. Overtime however, the app became laden with advertising.
Nevertheless, it remains one of the more reliable ways to reduce data usage on mobile.
If you have Opera Max installed, it will continue to function for a “period of time”, Opera explains. However, it has been delisted from the Google Play Store, and the app itself will no longer benefit from updates.
“We will inform these users about the termination of server-side support in due time,” the company concludes.
