Last week in trailers: horrified Jennifer Lawrence, Death Wish remake & more

trailers

Last week in trailers was all about blood, gore and murder so if you’re into that then get excited and maybe also seek a little help. From hostages to child soldiers to nuns, this week has all of your niche violence covered. So let’s jump straight in.

mother!

Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky has kept the details for his upcoming thriller mother! relatively quiet, and this short teaser was all that was offered last week.

Sporting a stellar cast of Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Harris, Domhnall Gleeson and Kristen Wiig, the film tells of a couple whose relationship is tested when a group of uninvited guests disrupts their tranquil existence.

The film hits South African shores 24 November.

Novitiate

Starring The Leftovers‘ Margaret Qualley, The Big Short‘s Melissa Leo and Glee‘s Dianna Agron, Novitiate tells of a 17-year-old postulant who questions her faith under the cruelty of the Reverend Mother.

The film had its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival in January, and currently has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

It does not have a South African release yet, but will open in the US on 27 October.

Death Wish

Bruce Willis stars in this remake of the eponymous 1974 film about a vigilante working to avenge the murder of his wife. The trailer has already faced controversy after many on Twitter have accused it of being “alt-right propganda”.

Whether the film promotes fascism or not, it looks boring and empty and I’d much rather rewatch The Mentalist season one.

Death Wish opens in the US 22 November.

9/11

Speaking of controversy, here’s the trailer for 9/11, the low-budget film that has everyone up-in-arms as it seeks to exploit tragedy with Charlie Sheen, Whoopi Goldberg and some really poor filmmaking.

The trailer also inexplicably hosts a range of behind-the-scenes interviews because it appears no one involved in its making knows how to make a movie.

9/11 opens 8 September in SA.

6 Days

“Wow, Stanley Tucci is really stretching his range,” you might think while watching this trailer for 6 Days. You wouldn’t be alone.

But Stanley Tucci is not doing anything of the sort. Actually, I don’t know what Stanley Tucci is doing — but what I do know is Mark Strong is in this film, and not all bald white men are the same person.

Once you’ve moved passed this revelation, it may be good to hear that 6 Days is a film about a real hostage situation in 1980 that took six days to come to an end (spoilers).

It so far only has a New Zealand and Portugal release on 7 September.

Mindhunter

Mindhunter is brought you by director David Fincher (House of Cards) and executive producer Charlize Theron. Based on the book Mind Hunter: Inside FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, the series looks at two FBI agents who seek to learn more about how serial killers think.

It stars Jonathon Groff, and premieres on Netflix 13 October.

First They Killed My Father

Directed by Angelina Jolie, First They Killed My Father tells the story of a young Cambodian girl who trained as a child soldier during the Pol Pot regime.

This film also faced its fair share of criticism, after Jolie revealed her intense casting techniques. Jolie told Vanity Fair that the crew went into a school for impoverished children and had them play a game where they showed the children money and asked what they would use it for. They were then told to take the money and lie about having taking it.

Srey Moch, who was eventually cast, sobbed when they asked her to give the money back. When asked after, she said she needed it for her grandfather’s funeral.

First They Killed My Father premieres on Netflix 15 September.

Call Me By Your Name

Moving away from violence, Call Me By Your Name is a film about a 17- year-old American-Italian boy who slowly falls for Oliver, an American PhD student helping his father.

The film had its worldwide release at Sundance Film Festival, and has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, with an average of 9.7/10 from 34 reviews.

Call Me By Your Name premieres in South Africa 16 March 2018.

Goodbye Christopher Robin

The second trailer for Goodbye Christopher Robin is out, and it’s here to wipe your brain clean of all the violence of the previous trailers.

The film stars Domhnall Gleeson and Margot Robbie and tells of the heartwarming making of beloved Winnie the Pooh.

The film premieres in the US 13 October.
