Ah, the bittersweet feeling of watching trailers never destined for South African theatres. It’s like being on Twitter when a cyclone hits Joburg, or the US holds an election — you just have to enjoy your popcorn from the sidelines.
But, hey, the heart wants what it wants and my heart wants trailers. So trailers it shall get.

mother!
The teaser for Darren Aronofsky’s mother! was released last week, but it didn’t take long for the official trailer to follow. It reveals a screaming Jennifer Lawrence, a shady Javier Bardem, bleeding light bulbs, potentially angry mobs and only a tiny bit of plot.
It has everything, including a South African release on 24 November.
The Crown
Currently Netflix’s most expensive show, The Crown is back to out-posh every series ever. The trailer promises a season much like the first, and offers little to those who found the show dragging.
Luckily for Netflix, there are still plenty who will be tuning in on 8 December when the second season premieres.
Rememory
Rememory is about a man solving a murder in a world where memories can be completely erased from people’s minds — though the trailer should have a spoiler warning offering a plot so predictable.
It features TV stars Peter Dinklage, Henry Ian Cusick and Evelyne Brochu. It also stars the late Anton Yelchin.
Rememory will be on Google Play by 24 August, and will be shown in select (probably US) theatres in September.
The Wilde Wedding
The Wilde Wedding stars Patrick Stewart as Man with Hair, because none other than John Malkovich has taken the role of Bald Man — and if that plot twist isn’t enough to give the trailer a watch, I don’t know what is.
The comedy promises a lot of laughs, introspection and sex — and does not yet have an SA release. It’s in US theatres 15 September.
Loving Vincent
The first animation to ever be completed with oil paintings is finally here after what feels like fifteen years of hype. Loving Vincent brings the life and works of Vincent van Gogh to life with 65 000 frames of oil paintings from 125 professional painters.
It is in US theatres 22 September.
Gun Shy
Gun Shy is about an aging rock star whose wife is kidnapped. Ostensibly very useless, he sets out to retrieve her from potential terrorists.
It stars Antonio Banderas and Olga Kurylenko, and was crowdfunded under the working title Salty. It opens on 8 September in the US.
Disjointed
Disjointed is by Chuck Lorre, the creator of The Big Bang Theory, and is a workplace comedy about a weed dispensary. It follows the exact same format as Big Bang Theory, including laugh tracks, fake-looking sets and a wealth of stereotypes.
It sadly stars Kathy Bates, and will be released globally on Netflix on 25 August.
The Death of Stalin
From the creator of Veep comes the satirical The Death of Stalin, which follows the internal political landscape of 1950s Soviet Russia. It stars a range of actors with varying accents, including Steve Buscemi, Jeffrey Tambor, Jason Isaacs and Olga Kurylenko.
The films hits UK theatres on 20 October.
The Deuce
If there’s one thing HBO loves to do, it’s flaunt its lack of censorship. And what better way to showcase that than with an entire show dedicated to the porn industry in the 1970s?
The Deuce stars Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco, and premieres 10 September in the US.
In Search of Fellini
In Search of Fellini is an indie film about a sheltered woman taking on Italy alone. There is no gratuitous shot of pizza or pasta in the trailer, but the cast is easy on the eyes so the lapse can be overlooked.
The film opens in the US on 15 September.
American Vandal
American Vandal is a satirical take on the true crime drama by Netflix, the company that has facilitated the genre’s resurgence in the past few years. The mockumentary series asks just one question of its viewers: who drew the dicks?
It premieres globally on 15 September.
