Update: 2.40pm: Two people have died after a storm lashed Durban early Tuesday morning.

The cut-off low responsible for the unstable weather is now moving east across the Indian Ocean, meteorologists say. The SA Weather Service explained that conditions are “expected to calm down late afternoon”.

It also stressed that the system is not a “tropical cyclone”.

Nevertheless, strong winds of up to 90km/h wreaked havoc across the city.

In Durban’s port, a container ship was blown across a portion of the harbour.

While the King Edward Hospital in Berea was damaged.

Even though the weather was severe, Durbanites were forced to continue with their daily lives. Some students were required to pen tests at UKZN.

The fake shark meme also made its return.

Alongside #DurbanStorm, #KZNStorm and #DBNStorm were also spotted on Twitter. Both hashtags were also trending in Durban and other parts of South Africa.

Original article: Yesterday it was Johannesburg that experienced severe weather. Today it’s Durban.

The city on the Eastern coastline of South Africa is today experiencing torrential rain as the result of a cut-off low which formed over the country yesterday.

It’s the same system that resulted in Monday’s storm, which lashed Johannesburg’s West Rand and moved across the province.

At around 10.30am, #DurbanStorm began trending on Twitter in Durban and across South Africa, as users posted videos and images of the weather and its effects.

South African recording artist Aewon Wolf also got involved with this series of tweets.

The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for the city, suggesting that 90km/h winds will be possible until 8pm tonight.

eNCA Weather has also suggested that over 100mm of rain can be expected in Durban and south of the city on Tuesday.

This is a developing story…
