‘House of Cards’ cancelled after Kevin Spacey sexual misconduct allegations

Netflix’s House of Cards will end with next year’s sixth season after Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp alleged that Kevin Spacey made sexual advances on him when he was 14 and Spacey 26.

The political thriller had been naturally nearing its end, and Deadline reports that Netflix and producers Media Rights Capital were already in talks to cancel it “a while ago”.

“In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported,” the companies wrote in a joint statement.

“As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”

It is still uncertain if Netflix’s upcoming Spacey-led film Gore, which began production in July this year, will be released as planned.

In an interview with BuzzFeed News, Anthony Rapp described a time in 1986 when Spacey drunkenly pushed his body on top of the then-minor.

Spacey denied memory of the incident, but offered his “sincerest apology” if it was true. He subsequently came out as “living life as a gay man”.

Many were outraged at the PR spin away from the allegations, of which Rapp is not the only one.

Variety has reported that Netflix is in early talks for various House of Cards spinoffs, one of which would focus on Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly), a political aide-de-camp who appeared in the show’s first five seasons.
