SA’s box office: Thor RagnaROCKS

Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok has hammered itself home into top spot this weekend, which is Loki a great opener for Marvel. Actually it’s pretty high-key, but I wanted to make a Hela good pun.

Bet you never Thor that one coming.

Okay, I’m done. Let’s see how other films did this weekend. (27 -29 October)

Last week’s number one, Geostorm, held strong in second place despite its terrible US run. Though the disaster film may have been panned by its own people, international markets like China, Russia, and Mexico helped it make back its production budget.

In third place is newcomer The Jungle Bunch, an animated film about personified animals on a mission to save their jungle. Sadly for The Emoji Movie — and wonderfully for society — the added competition meant it was kicked three spots all the way down to sixth.

Also dropping three spots is Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle, which has officially lost its glean — though the US$377.7-million its made worldwide means it likely won’t karat all.

You know what else no one cares about? Jigsaw, the latest in the Saw franchise that, despite impressing US audiences, left South Africans unperturbed. The horror opened in eighth spot on Halloween weekend.

Finally, the end is near for the woefully underperforming Blade Runner: 2049. The critically-acclaimed film raised expectations for a strong October, but the near three-hour-long sci-fi could not live up to the hype, and fell all of four places down to tenth.

Here are ten most-watched movies in SA this past weekend:

  1. Thor: Ragnarok (Incl. 3D, IMAX & 4DX) (NEW)
