There’s a massive list of major films that were promoted last week: from super-hyped franchises and serious Oscar contenders to trashy movies that know exactly what they are. Here’s the list.
Justice League
No ad to show here.
Justice League is still pretending that Superman is dead despite the fact that everyone saw the dust rise off his coffin in Batman v Superman. There are some theories as to why they’re upholding the ruse, and my favourite is that Superman is the villain of this film.
Scandalous, I know.
Also revealed in the trailer is a super hunky Aquaman, a bantering The Flash, and a life-saving Cyborg — all gearing up to save the world with their stupid amounts of attractiveness.
Justice League is out in SA 17 November.
Pacific Rim: Uprising
It’s been ten years since the Battle of the Breach. The Jaeger program is now the most powerful defense force in human history — but the Kaiju threat is not over.
In this much-anticipated sequel, John Boyega plays Jake Pentecost, Mako Mori’s adopted brother thrust into fighting for the entire human race.
Pacific Rim: Uprising is out in SA on 23 March 2018.
Paddington 2
If you’re done with violence, here’s a quick reprieve: the adorable trailer for Paddington 2.
In the hopes of saving money to buy his Aunt Lucy an adorable London pop-up book, Paddington becomes a working bear. But when the book is stolen, Paddington and his friends race to find the thief.
Starring Ben Whishaw, Hugh Grant, Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville and Julie Walters (among many others), the film is released 1 December.
Molly’s Game
Here’s the second trailer that features Idris Elba this week, because sometimes the universe is Good.
Molly’s Game is about Molly Bloom (Jessica Chastain), an Olympic-class skier who ran world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade. This trailer dives deeper into the mind of the woman who risked everything to protect the names of her clients while simultaneously salvaging her own.
The film is out 8 December.
Roman J Israel, Esq.
Roman J Israel (Denzel Washington) is a liberal defense lawyer who seeks to help the poor and dispossessed — but when he is forced to take over his law firm, he finds evidence of background dealings that ran against everything he stands for.
It stars Denzel Washington and Colin Farrell, and is out in SA 13 April 2018.
Crooked House
In this Agatha Christie adaptation, Max Irons plays a spy-turned-private-detective seeking to find who killed his ex-lover’s grandfather.
Lured into the “crooked house”, he meets three generations of strange family members — including a middle-aged theatre actress and the widow 50 years her late husband’s junior.
It stars Glenn Close, Gillian Anderson, and Christina Hendricks, and was adapted by Julian Fellowes of Downton Abbey fame.
Crooked House is “coming soon”.
Replicas
From the writer that brought you The Day After Tomorrow comes Replica — a film about Keanu Reeves cloning his dead family because that’s his grieving process, I guess.
Of course, this is all stupidly illegal, and so — while his wife is learning of her own death — he also has to fight the government and the natural laws of physics.
Replicas is also “coming soon”.
Jack Ryan
John Krasinski is CIA analyst Jack Ryan, Tom Clancy’s iconic character that’s starred in many a novel and film adaptation.
An exclusive to Amazon Prime, the eight-episode series tells of Ryan as “his search for answers pulls him from the safety of his desk job and catapults him into a deadly game of cat and mouse”.
It will premiere on Amazon Video in 2018.
Newness
Are you ready for a sincere romantic drama about a Tinder relationship? Doesn’t matter: it’s here.
From the director of the depressing yet beautiful Like Crazy, Newness tells of a couple who are constantly searching for some novel form of exhilaration at the strain of long-term commitment.
The film will be made available on iTunes 3 November, and should reach other streaming platforms shortly after.
Castle Rock
Fed up with the trailers that tell the whole story? Here’s one that gives you absolutely nothing.
From it, you will deduce: Castle Rock is a series. JJ Abrams produced it. It’s based on something Stephen King did. It stars Andre Holland of Moonlight fame, and Bill Skarsgård of It fame.
Some people are dead. Some people are creepy. And that’s about it.
Castle Rock will be available on Hulu in 2018.
Future Man
Hulu is on a series kick after its major win at the Emmy’s this year, so here’s another trailer.
Future Man tells the story of a gamer bro who finds out his favourite game is real and has been used as a test by humans of the future to find the saviour of the human race.
It stars Josh Hutcherson, and was created by Seth Rogen. It premieres 14 November on Hulu.
The Babysitter
The Babysitter is a film about hot people who are into human sacrifice.
That’s really all you need to know — and, I guess, that it stars Bella Thorne.
The film is on Netflix 13 October.
The Woods
From the winners of 2017’s Streamy Award for Show of the Year comes short film The Woods.
The film — which will not follow the canon of Sugar Pine 7 — will star the original members and some other familiar YouTube faces.
It will be released on the Sugar Pine 7 channel on 30 October.
