17-year-old Paxton Fielies on Sunday won the 13th season of popular South African talent competition Idols at Carnival City, Johannesburg.

Competing against fellow hopeful, 25-year-old Mthokozisi Ndaba, the duo received over 30-million votes in the final week. But with the majority, Fielies becomes the youngest ever winner of the competition.

“I worked very hard to be where I am,” Fielies said, reported TimesLIVE.

“I celebrated every performance knowing how hard I worked. I did receive criticism sometimes but I didn’t let it get me down.”

But her win was more than merely a personal triumph.

Communities across Cape Town gathered in droves to watch Paxton Fielies’ final performance. In Bishop Lavis and Belhar, 12 000 people came together in support.

Said supporters also included Western Cape MECs.

“I’m proud of fellow Cape Townians (sic) & the #BishopLavis community. You backed our girl #Paxton, and more importantly reclaimed your public spaces from gangsters & drug-pushers!” tweeted MEC Albert Fritz.

A slew of other Twitter users also posted videos of the scenes.

Paxton Fielies, in a press conference after her win, thanked the community for the support.
