It’s that time of year between raging holidays and looming work, so if you’re looking to cram in a bit of relaxation before heading back to the office, here’s Netflix South Africa’s first month of new content in 2018.
1 January: Lovesick
No ad to show here.
New Years Day is the perfect time to hear the word “sick”, no?
British sitcom Lovesick rings in 2018 as Dylan, Luke, and Evie trudge their way through the world of love, lust, and STIs.
In the show’s third season, Evie faces her feelings for Dylan, who’s in a serious relationship with Abigail, who is unsure of where she stands in the midst of all the drama. Also Luke is there.
5 January: The End of the F**king World
James is convinced he’s a psychopath. Alyssa thinks she could fall in love with him. He thinks he should kill her.
Based on the eponymous graphic novel by Charles S Forsman, The End of the F**king World is an eight-episode dark comedy that follows the teenage outsiders as they punch their dads, run away, and (probably) fall in love.
Coming to Netflix South Africa: Plenty of new sitcom seasons, Jack Black comedy The Polka King, and more
Also out on 5 January is documentary series Rotten (trailer), about the “corruption, waste and real dangers” lurking within the food production underworld, as well as the second season of eclectic mystery-comedy Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (trailer).
12 January: The Polka King
The Polka King tells the story of Jan Lewan, the Polish businessman who got rich off a “Polka Ponzi scheme” that fleeced investors and saw him build a polka empire.
The tragicomedy stars Jack Black, Jenny Slate, and Jason Schwartzman as the brains behind polka’s biggest scandal.
Not interested? Also out on the 12th is documentary series Somebody Feed Phil (trailer), which follows Everybody Loves Raymond creator Phil Rosenthal around the world as he gleefully searches for the dishes that melt local hearts.
19 January: Grace and Frankie
Television’s greatest divorcée duo is back — and so too are their trials and tribulations.
Teased in the trailer for the fourth season of sitcom Grace and Frankie: Grace’s declining joints, Sol and Robert’s marital woes, a stick-it-to-the-man vibrator business, and a Lisa Kudrow cameo.
Two original films will also be released on the 19th: Step Sisters (trailer), a Pitch Perfect-meets-Stomp the Yard story about a black woman teaching a white sorority to step, and The Open House (trailer), a standard haunted house horror starring 13 Reason Why‘s Dylan Minnette.
26 January: A Futile and Stupid Gesture
The National Lampoon was a cutting-edge humour magazine that combined intelligent parodies with crass jokes, pushing at the boundaries of what was acceptable in the 1970s and 1980s.
A Futile and Stupid Gesture tells the story of the magazine’s co-founder Doug Kenney, who helped shape the counter-culture that spawned the likes of Saturday Night Live. The film stars Will Forte, Domhnall Gleeson, and Joel McHale.
Also to be released on the platform on 26 January is the second season of rebooted family sitcom One Day at a Time, which follows the lives of a Cuban-American family led by an army vet single mom.
