I spend an inordinate amount of time of my workday on social media. But while Twitter’s always open in my browser, and Facebook is never too far away either, another site that’s frequently visited on my machine is Reddit.
Reddit is an excellent way to unearth the latest news, gauge what’s hot on the internet at that very moment, and seek out forthcoming memes and trends. It’s also just a great place to spend watching cat GIFs.
No ad to show here.
But it’s so much more than that too.
In honour of my productive procrastination, here are some of the hottest subreddits of the past week, ranked in no particular order.
Secret Compartments
If any squirrels read Memeburn, you might want to sit down for this.
For our human readers, this sub of 15 000 is a portal of inspiration for anyone who ever wanted to hide something.
If you like, nooks, crannies and niches, this sub is for you. If you like remembering where you actually put things, it probably isn’t.
Watch People Die Inside
Some people are just not meant to play certain sports (If bowling is a sport) from WatchPeopleDieInside
No, no death is involved, but the subjects of these posts do mourn the loss of their ambition, hopes and dreams. Of course, all this while the rest of the internet indulges in schadenfreude.
It’s one of the more popular subs on this list with nearly 175 000 subscribers.
Keanu Being Awesome
There’s no denying that as an actor Keanu Reeves is one of the most influential men to have ever donned a suit, stopped bullets in mid-air, and rescued a new dog from a pound after avenging his previous dog. But as a human, he isn’t too bad either.
This sub of 17 000 subscribers, celebrates the little moments when Keanu Reeves shows himself to be a superhero in real life.
Asshole Design
Facebook pages can now add you as a follower apparently. from assholedesign
Bad design is everywhere, but generally human beings can’t account for every single eventuality. Some designers embrace this, and design things badly anyway without giving much of a care.
This is what Asshole Design is dedicated to: celebrating those who decided to do something badly deliberately, rather than try to do something properly and ruining it anyway.
Behind The Photo
Audi makes miniatures look incredibly realistic from behindthephoto
Just over a week old with 5000 subscribers, Behind The Photo is the newest kid on the block. But the content is no less interesting.
The idea is simple: contributors post two pictures. The first is a well-known snap, the second explains how said snap was made. All in all, it paints a completely different picture of the first image, and explains the process of photography in greater detail.
It’s a sub for everyone, but especially one for those who can’t quite believe their eyes or enjoy the hidden detail in things usually forgotten or taken for granted.
