Cape Town’s quite used to running into celebrities along its more popular attractions, but a South African president?
Yesterday, President Cyril Ramaphosa was spotted with former finance minister Trevor Manuel and a crew of bodyguards taking a leisurely jog along the city’s Sea Point promenade.

Naturally, other joggers stopped mid-4km, got out their phones, and asked the new leader of the nation for a selfie.
He obliged.
Did we mention Trevor Manuel was also there?
Ramaphosa does seemingly have an official Instagram presence, @presidentcyrilramaphosa to be exact, but it’s carefully manicured and incredibly young.
Registered on 16 January 2018, the account holds just 15 posts and is still described as the account of the “President of the African National Congress” not including the President of South Africa.
According to analytics firm Meltwater however, he has been mentioned more than 90 000 times on social media since Jacob Zuma’s resignation.
Nevertheless, if President Ramaphosa takes to Lion’s Head or Camps Bay beach this weekend, expect him to light up Instagram — arguably the least political of South Africa’s social networks — in due time.
