South African talent litters Kendrick Lamar’s Black Panther soundtrack

Last night, Kendrick Lamar dropped the track list for the curated Black Panther soundtrack he produced and South Africans couldn’t be more excited.

Local acts Babes Wodumo, Sjava, Yugen Blakrok, and Saudi are all featured on the 14-track album that includes major international acts like The Weeknd, Khalid, SZA, Future, and Lamar himself.

Early last month, Lamar dropped the first single from the album, an upbeat collaboration by him and up-and-coming R&B artist SZA.

But the South Africans eager to hear tracks like “X”, “Opps”, “Seasons”, and “Redemption” — all of which feature homegrown talent — will have to wait until 9 February when the album is released. The album is currently available for preorder on iTunes for R109.99.

And if you think you’ll skip on buying the album for that Black Panther film release on the 16th of Feb, you may want to reconsider. Lamar’s album will feature music “from and inspired by” the film, meaning that not all of the songs on the curated soundtrack will necessarily make it to the big screen.

Either way, chances are high that the tracks will make their way to YouTube so you can listen as local flavour injects itself into what is sure to be an epic ride.
