SA’s box office: Gnomes, games and sparrows finally kill Jumanji

This week’s Southern African weekend box office report saw three distinct trends. There were the movers, the new entries, and the top two.

Notably, Jumanji wasn’t among the latter. Instead, the Dwayne Johnson flick which made over R61-million at the box office throughout its prosperous life is finally dying. It drops three places this week from third to sixth.

Joining it is Tad, The Lost Explorer and the Secret of King Midas (*breathe*), Oscar-winning Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Raaiselkind. All three drop three spots to make room for this week’s new entries.

Those new entries are led by Gnome Alone debuting in and outdone only by chart-topping Black Panther (which remained at the top of the chart), and second placed Fifty Shades Freed (because, well, we’re not really sure why).

Two films on the opposite end of the hilarious-extremely-uncomfortable spectrum appear next; Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman’s Game Night makes its entrance in fourth spot, and the Jennifer Lawrence-starring Red Sparrow debuts in fifth.

And finally, The Greatest Showman, only in its second week on the chart, is already on its way out dropping one spot to tenth place.

Phantom Thread prints were also distributed this week but failed to make the top ten chart.

Here are the ten most-watched movies in SA this past weekend:
