Here’s how the F-word trended on Reddit after Croatia beat England

It’s Friday, and we hope that England fans have calmed down by now, especially considering the below data.

On Wednesday night, when Croatia put two goals past Pickford to book their place in their first ever World Cup final, there were a lot of F-bombs thrown around on the internet. Notably on Reddit in particular.

Through a trending post on r/dataisbeautiful, Reddit user u/PieGeters documented the timeline of comments posted to the r/soccer subreddit that included the word “fuck”.

According to u/PieGeters, was created “in an hour at work”.

Uses of the word “Fuck” in the r/soccer match thread during yesterdays game between England and Croatia. 3.86% of 40,888 comments used the word [OC] from r/dataisbeautiful

Over 40 000 comments included English’s most versatile four-letter word during the 120-minute match. In fact, nearly 4% of all comments on the subreddit during the semi-final included the word.

Notably, this doesn’t include any of the f-word’s variations (I’m sure you all know what those are).

Some notable spikes in usage of the word included Kieran Trippier’s early free kick strike, Ivan Perisic’s equaliser, and the largest spike of all? Mandzukic’s final blow in extra-time.

The use of the word saw a taller plateau after this defining moment, with u/PieGeters labelling this section as “general whining and pleading” and “post match hatred”.

It’s pretty incredible how the same word can be used to emphasise joy and heartache.

As for future posts, u/PieGeters is promising more analysis during the European football season.

“Already had a few suggestions to improve this so maybe you’ll see more from me during the premier league!
