The United States isn’t the world’s foremost footballing nation — unless you’re talking about their variant using a rugby ball and “end zones”.
But you’d expect a country of some 325-million people to have a grasp on the World Cup thus far. After all, it’s one of the planet’s most watched events.
No ad to show here.
But nope.
According to Google Trends data, the United States actually isn’t too sure who’s in the World Cup.
“Is Mexico still in the World Cup?” is reportedly the nation’s most searched for question in the past week.
Stranger still is this question: “Who won the World Cup?”
We’ll be able to answer that particular question in a week or so, America.
Even funnier are searches for the rules of football in the country over the past two weeks.
“What is offsides in soccer?” is definitely a standout that we’ve all ashamedly searched for at one point in our lives, while “How to become a soccer refereee?” is something Maradona might be mashing into Google this very minute.
We’re into the semi-final stage of the tournament. With four matches to go, France play Belgium on Tuesday night and England will face off against Croatia in Wednesday’s semi-final.
The final will take place on Sunday at 5pm South African time.
