Statistics South Africa has had a habit of announcing sad news this year, but it’s latest report details something more cheerful.
The agency today announced South Africa’s most popular baby name for 2017, as it documented the country’s birth rates during its latest report.

“Enzokuhle was the most popular name in for both boys and girls registered in 2017,” it tweeted, adding that the name means “to do good”.
For girls, Melokuhle, Amahle and Lethabo round up the top four, while Lethabo, Melokuhle and Lubanzi are the next most common boys names.

As for province-by-province popularity, Liam is the most popular boys name in the Western Cape, while Mia is most popular with girls.
Luthando and Lethabo take the boys and girls top spot in Gauteng, respectively.

Stats SA notes that 897 750 births were registered in South Africa in 2017.
