This week’s Southern Africa box office chart is dominated by large bodies of water, a large prehistoric shark and Jason Statham. No surprises there, really.
After South African audiences got tired of seeing The Rock jump across skyscrapers as if they were three-feet tall, The Meg has debuted in first place on the local chart. That’s keep up with the international trend at present too.

The film also stars Ruby Rose, Li Bingbing and a megalodon lurking in the deepest trench in the Earth’s ocean. While critics have bashed the film, it has already opened to just shy of US$150-million internationally.
In second place this week, critically-acclaimed Mission Impossible: Fallout spent its third week on the chart in second place, falling one place.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again — the sequel to 2008’s flick — places third in its fourth week on circuit.
In fourth place, South African adventure Stroomop is awarded the strongest debut of a local film this year. Donnalee Roberts, Simoné Nortmann and Chanelle de Jager star in a flick about “fighting against death to rediscover, forgive and accept themselves to find healing and friendship”.
Charming — which rolls three fairytales into one movie — is now the highest-placed animation on circuit in fifth. It stars the voices of Demi Lovato, Wilmer Valderrama, Sia and Ashley Tisdale.
Christopher Robin and Pooh Bear spend their second week on circuit in sixth place, after debuting in a lowly fifth place last week.
Seventh placed The Incredibles 2 has since made more than R51-million at the local box office, while Skyscraper is now eighth.
Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society and Broken Promises: 4-Ever — the other successful South African movie on the chart — round up this week’s top ten.
