2016 was a dark year for DC movies. Suicide Squad was as riveting as a cold bowl of oats, and Batman v Superman is the reason why I now hate the name Martha.

2017 wasn’t much better, with Justice League receiving a vaguely waggled hand by our reviewers.

Later though, Wonder Woman presented an upward trend, and as December 2018 rolled around, the company’s fortunes had changed. Massively.

Aquaman is now South Africa’s biggest DC Comics movie ever, eclipsing all but two Marvel movies — Black Panther and Infinity War — to now rank as the third biggest superhero movie in the country. Ever.

Locally, the flick has grossed more than R43.4-million locally, and according to Ster Kinekor data, still ranks as the biggest movie in the country as of this past weekend.

As for the other top ranking movies in South Africa at present: Rami Malek’s Bohemian Rhapsody ranks second, while John Cena’s Bumblebee is third. These two flicks have reversed their positions since last weekend.

Mary Poppins Returns and Robin Hood retain their fourth and fifth places, while The Grinch drops out of the chart entirely. It’s replaced by Instant Family, which climbs from eighth in last weekend’s chart to sixth.

Final Score — a new entry starring Dave Bautista as the most agitated West Ham fan ever — arrives in seventh.

Second Act jumps to seventh from tenth, Ralph Breaks The Internet drops two places to ninth, while Old Man And The Gun — the second new entry starring Robert Redford — props up the others in tenth.
