Cell C, in partnership with Facebook, has announced its first public access WiFi hotspot at the University of Western Cape (UWC).
In a press release, the company revealed that the initiative is being supported by Facebook Express Wi-Fi, a division of Facebook that provides countries access to connectivity.

“The Facebook Express Wi-Fi platform will help Cell C bring fast, affordable and reliable internet access to the South African public and the partnership with UWC marks Cell C’s first steps to rolling out WiFi hotspots across the country,” the company stated.
The hotspot is free for students on UWC’s campus, and Cell C intends to set up further access points across Cape Town.
“More areas will be announced once the City’s municipality has approved additional rollout areas. This follows the Memorandum of Understanding which was signed between Cell C and the City in 2018,” Cell C explained.
This means that we may soon have access to WiFi wherever we go within the city, without having to pop into coffee shops to use their internet.
“Cell C is pleased to have the first of these public points used in an educational institution that helps to build on digital literacy of the youth in South Africa,” the company concluded.
