Facebook, Twitter and YouTube removed all traces of the footage, and asked users not to share it.

Though many details have not yet been confirmed, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden assured the public that more would be revealed as the truth unfolded.

“There is no place in New Zealand for such acts of extreme and unprecedented violence,” she said in a live broadcast by CNN.

Since the news broke, people all over social media took it upon themselves to reiterate the seriousness of the crime.

According to reports, four people have been arrested, including one Australian citizen.

Currently, the death toll stands at 40 people, with many more reportedly injured.
