EFF goes to Parliament to rename Cape Town’s airport after Winnie Mandela

Just two months ahead of the 2019 National Elections, the EFF will table a motion in Parliament to change the name of Cape Town International Airport to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela International Airport.

In the release posted to Twitter, the party suggests that the renaming will honour the “struggle veteran and fearless fighter for the liberation of the people of South Africa”.

It also noted that the renaming will ensure that the memory of Winnie Mandela’s “gallant war against Apartheid are not deleted”.

Thanks to a slow political news day, the hashtag #ChooseWinnieMandela began trending on Monday morning after EFF big wigs tweeted the plan.

And while some welcomed the move by the EFF…

…Others see it as a crafty pre-election chess move, and waste of money.

Notably, Cape Town International Airport wasn’t always the facility’s name. It was opened in the 1950s and was known back then as DF Malan Airport — named after a former South African prime minister.

Whether you’re for or against the motion, you’ll probably want to catch the Parliamentary debate on the matter at 2pm today.
