In 2010, he founded Burn Media Group where he was affectionately known as Matt in the news and boardroom.
Burn Media’s director Cobus Heyl expressed Buckland’s loss as a “shock”.
“Matt’s passing is a deep shock to us all. We have not only lost our founder, but also a friend,” said Heyl.
“Immensely respected, Matt actively contributed to Burn Media Group right to the end. This included the recent launch of new sites, of which he was immensely proud. It is a testament to his dedication to the business.
“True to form he also put in place the building blocks for the business to continue, not least with a strong and dedicated team driving the business forward. Matt’s legacy will live on in BMG.
“Last but not least we think of Bridget, the kids and wider family at this time. They were Matt’s life. Our hearts are with them.”
Matt will always be remembered as a giant in his industry. He will be missed dearly by all in the Burn Media newsroom.
A memorial will be held at Cape Point Vineyards, Noordhoek, Cape Town on 30 April 2019 at 10am.
