Did you know you can learn the tricks of the animation trade here in South Africa? Cape Town-based animation studio Triggerfish has a free animation course accessible online through its website or its YouTube channel.
At Triggerfish Academy, which was originally launched in February, students can watch 25 videos offering guidance, lessons and exercises all aimed at learning about animation and the career opportunities available in the field.

Triggerfish’s Tim Argall created the course in partnership with the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and the Goethe-Institut.
“Aspiring animators can also use Triggerfish Academy to learn how to write and animate their own short story, then post their animation on the Academy’s Facebook group for feedback and advice from professional animators,” the company explained in a press release.
Videos include “Animation Myth Busting” and a “Parent Persuasion Kit” as well as a number of technical lessons for details like camera language, composition and eye movement.
The course aims to provide prospective animators with the grounding they need to further pursue the career.
