Apple has officially bought a majority of Intel’s smartphone modem business in a $1-billion deal, the companies confirmed on Thursday.

The agreement will allow Apple to make its 5G and other modem components for iPhones, while Intel will “retain the ability to develop modems for non-smartphone applications”.

“Approximately 2200 Intel employees will join Apple, along with intellectual property, equipment and leases,” Apple explained.

The addition of Intel’s modem business brings Apple’s wireless technology patents up to 17 000.

“Apple is excited to have so many excellent engineers join our growing cellular technologies group, and know they’ll thrive in Apple’s creative and dynamic environment,” said Apple’s Johny Srouji.

Intel, meanwhile, intends to focus its attention on developing 5G network technology.
